Ogden Dentist Video #23:

What is TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint)?

In this video, Dr. Jim Ellis, DDS (a dentist in Ogden, Utah) discusses what a  TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) is.

If your TMJ or temporomandibular joint functions properly, you just don’t know it is there. Just like many of the joints in your body. You don’t know that they’re there until they hurt or until they bother you.

Your temporomandibular joint, the joint right in front of your ears here, if it’s malfunctioning in any way, you’ll start to experience some pain, some discomfort will be the first thing. The more advanced stages of TMJ trouble, you’d start to feel some grinding. You’d actually start to feel more of like, a bone on bone. You might even hear some popping. If you do things that require a lot of stress by your joints, if you grind on your teeth, if you’re a heavy gum chewer, things like that. If you use your jaw a lot, if your profession requires you to talk all the time, you might notice that you’re hearing things or it’s getting very painful. Any pain or discomfort in either side could mean that the entire joint is starting to break down on you, so any pain, any noise, anything like that, you should get in to see your dentist.
